The DT Swiss Episode

This episode was the one that made me spread the word. I already know that almost everybody will say that they were right but bare with and try to put yourself in my shoes.

The first thing to say is that the back wheel had a disk of plastic between the cassete and the spokes, i believe that it was there to protect the spokes in case of chain jumped off the cassete, well, what it did was thin out the spokes, but i thought that i was the one to blade, because i should had removed it. This was my first mistake, i should have inform Canyon but i didn’t maybe because i just wanted to ride the my bike.

Recently a few spokes of the back wheel broke and ask my mechanic to replace the broken spokes and some spoke nipples that were damaged. The nipples are made of aluminium and are very weak, it looks they are made from copper.

After the rim tape was removed it was detected some cracks on the rim and was recommended to replace it, i order a new dtswiss XR331 rim to replace it, then i remember that the wheels were still with is warranty active and send an email with some photos of the cracked rim to Canyon. The answer was the expected, they told me that they’ll pick up the wheel and send it for repair and that i should sent the whole wheel and not only the damaged rim.

Of course i didn’t wait for new spokes and nipples to put the wheel together with new parts, just assembled the wheel with what was available and sent it to replace, or so i thought.

A few weeks later i received the news that the wheel wouldn’t be replace, because it didn’t had all the original spokes and nipples, that it wasn’t straight and the spokes didn’t had the same tension.

First of all they should’ve warned me, when they told me not to send only the rim, that the wheel should have it’s original parts. It’s also ridiculous that they expected a trued wheel with all the correct tension on the spokes.

To me it also seem unlikely that a rim would crack because of spokes and nipples from other brand, despite that they where put in the wheel after the cracks. That only reveal the poor quality of the rim of a renowned company like DT Swiss.

In conclusion, had to pay 40€ to get my wheel back and DT Swiss NEVER AGAIN, they’re expensive, stupidly hard and expensive to maintain.

About Me.

I'm just a rider sharing is experience with the hope of helping someone with some doubts about buying a Canyon Bike.
